One of the things I was most excited to do on this trip since we were spending Christmas Eve in Venice, was attend Midnight Mass at St. Mark’s Basilica. We spent time earlier in the night walking around all of Piazzo San Marco. It was so beautiful with the moon shining bright and all of the Christmas lights strung between alleys.
We came back later that evening to wait in line for Midnight Mass. Be sure to get to the Basilica much earlier than the mass start time. I’m so glad we did because the line was already very long and we ended up with great seats inside since we were early. The inside of the Basilica is so amazing! They told us no cameras so I only have a few sneaky iphone pics.
We scored on seats right in front of the service – and also right behind a row of nuns! They had told us no camera’s were allowed but one of the funniest things I saw was when the priest came in the nuns in front of us were so excited they whipped out their cameras and took tons of pictures! They were total fangirls. It was hilarious!
We weren’t really sure what to expect from this experience since we are not Catholic. The service was very long! As in 3-4 hours long… It was done in Italian and there was a lot of chanting and incense. The incense they carry down the aisles in these big lantern-like containers that they swing back and forth. The scent is so overwhelming, not in a bad way, and it is so warm in the room that it basically put me right to sleep! I’m not sure how much of the service I slept through but there ya go.. It was still an amazing experience and I’m so glad we were able to attend!
Venice is really beautiful and just so cozy. I felt really peaceful and happy here.
